I have helped two people this week. I helped one of them read and one of them with math. This has made me feel better about myself knowing I have helped others!

In the last week, I have accomplished making a new resume for criminal justice. I went to the externship orientation, where we discussed where I will possibly be doing my externship. I will find out soon.

I have learned that I am capable of running a class. I am not as nervous as I was before.

I know now how to write. I wrote a story about my dog that died. I wrote about my life, short but to the point. I wrote about my dog I have now. I wrote a poem about someone that was close to me. I read a book of stories and made questions on the stories. I have passed off my multiplication and now on division. I read better now and have more confidence in reading out loud. Some of my spelling is better, too. I would like to be able read at a high school or more and spell just as good. I would like to learn to put the right grammar in what I write. I would like to do math at least at a high school level.

This week I set a goal to learn more about the internet. This week I have been working hard on reading, math, and training for the Special Olympics. I had a good week.

Erik
I’m writing a scary story. It’s about an evil werewolf doctor that steals hearts and body parts.

David
I’m relearning the rules of grammar. I had grown to take them for granted and forgotten why they worked the way they do.

I fixed my bike last night. I was talking about goals yesterday. My goals are to read the driver license handbook and to improve my spelling. I also want to get farther in my math than borrowing.

Here at the Literacy Action Center I have learned how to set goals. My goals are to get my life together again by trying 10 times harder to get an apartment for my children and me. So far, I have gotten some applications turned in and I am on my way to accomplishing my goals.

This week our discussion in book club made me realize that our words are very powerful. I learned I must be careful with what words I choose to say to people. People hold onto what they hear and it’s possible they may never let it go!

This week I joined a book club. We are reading The Four Agreements. I found the chapter we read to be very relevant in some way to each of us. Very cool and fun.

This week I have been still working with math, and learning how to write a story about a person who was born small in body size and height. He is not handicapped. He is a normal 12-year-old named Astien he is the only child, and he has never met any o his relatives. He had to find a way to find a job and earn money to survive. Astien thought that he was the only child who stood 2 feet tall at the age of 12, until he met small people in town. Astien started feeling better abut himself and he wants these tiny people to be his new family because he will not accept no other family, after his parents dies. One thought lead to another though, so I am going to see how far I get in my first book. I always wondered how authors can go on making up stories for a book and now I am learning how it’s done. I am really interested in sharing my own thoughts. I have written 23 pages so far, and already received feedback saying “we can’t wait until your done! So we can read it.” I have really good support from others who are in my class that care.

For the first time as a dad I was able to help one of my kids with school work. I helped my son with algebra. It means a lot to my son. As a result, he had a great week and doesn’t hate math for now!

I have started writing a story. I wrote two poems. With the help of Deb and Ashley I’m starting algebra. I joined Ashley’s book club. I’m reading Ford County by John Grisham.

I have been reading a book called Alice in Wonderland. It is a very interesting book. My son comes in and I read a few pages to him he enjoys it.

Scott
I completed the Tutor Training on Saturday and received my certificate. It was satisfying to attend and learn so much. I became aware of the amount of adults that need help to read, write and do math.

Lisette
I have learned, or rather began, practicing my pronunciation. While helping a student with spelling, by sounding out the words, my awareness of each letters individual sound has helped me be more aware of my speech and trying to slow down when I talk. I have also learned or been reminded that density is not weight. An object that floats is denser than water.

Sarah
I’ve learned that salt doesn’t change the density of the things we put in the salt water. I’ve learned that I need to work on my spelling. You know who you’re friends are, when they are willing to help you when your down, even if it is just to talk to you when you need them.

This week I have been working on my times tables and I have learned a little, because math has not been easy for me. I have a hard time internalizing. It’s like my brain is tired and has a hard time holding numbers. I have been working on writing my own stories, in hope that some day more people will enjoy my imagination.

What I have learned about is cockroaches and giant squids. There are different kinds of cockroaches in America. The giant squids can grow up to 60 feet long and can weigh up to 800 pounds or more. It’s eyes can grow up to ten inches across. The giant squid has a big head it can grow up to three feet long.

I’ve learned more about the inadequacies of education. Schools seem more concerned with test scores and graduation rates than the actual educating of students. They solve this by kicking out students that test poorly and passing students that never learned the material.

Well, I have been going to college for five weeks now. My homework load has been huge. I feel like I never stop studying. This last Tuesday I took a test in my biology 1010 class. I feel really good about it. I have to write a 12 page research paper for my history 1700 class. Our topic is the Gilded Age, and I am really nervous. I’m going to spend my weekend studying like crazy.

This week I learned that people learn at all different paces. This doesn’t mean that one person is smarter then the other. This means that they catch on to things quicker. Some people’s brains process information faster than others. I’ve learned that people are more knowledgeable in certain subjects, but no person is smarter then anyone else. All people make mistakes, get things wrong, and say things that they are unsure of. I’ve learned a lot about human nature.

This week I have learned or refreshed my memory on how to do percentages. I am almost done with my math packet.

I am testing out of addition. When I do so, I will go on to multiplication. I have to do bigger numbers to test totally out of addition, so I can go on to multiplication.

I finished two of my tutoring goals. One was I finished my story problems math book. The last one is I got 100% on my doable digit division worksheet. This made me feel very proud of myself.

I am learning how to borrow in subtraction. Also how to keep my word when I say I will show up and don’t. In science I learned that eggs, oranges, apples and plastic bears float, and raisins don’t.

Today it was interesting learning about density. We experimented with water and salt water to see if raisins, oranges, apples, eggs, and a plastic teddy bear would float. Everything did float except the raisins. The eggs floated higher when we added more salt.

Me
I registered for school at South Point High in West Jordan on Wednesday. I got two new packets, and both are the wrong ones. I have committed to reading six books by December. I have learned that hot and cold water boils at the same time. Ashley abandoned us this week just to start college.

Scott
This week I was able to compose a short story. I practiced typing while entering my story on the computer. I think I increased my typing speed from 4 words to 6 words per minute. Now that’s precious!

Kaye
I haven’t read a book since high school. I actually started to read a book this week. I read only a chapter, but my goal is to get this book finished in thirty days. If I put my mind to it, I definitely can do it!

What have I learned? I came to Literacy Action Center with the mentality that I would be answering phones, filing paperwork, and doing clerical work. When I got here I was automatically greeted by everyone, students and interns, who made me feel comfortable and able to speak with everyone. I met an intern named Brenda. She was kind enough to fill me in on who was everyone and where everything was. I noticed that everything here is positive. Everyone commends the people who have accomplished their goals by the end of the day. I actually felt good and excited to return the next day. I have felt positive about life since them. I went home and told my partner all about it. She got happy just to hear how many positive vibes you get here. I look forward to next week.

Coming to Literacy Action Center has reminded me how much I love to help people. Helping people makes me feel like I do my part in the world, which is a great feeling. I’ve only been here for a couple of weeks but I learned that you need to have patience and dedication to really help out here. I haven’t mastered it but I would really love to someday and make a difference in people’s lives.

I have a goal, like all my classmates, to read 7 books in 4 months. I have to read every night. I haven’t yet figured out how to juggle reading and spelling but I know I will figure it out on my own. There has to be an easy way. I just have to wait for it to come to me.

L.A.C. motivates me and helps me accomplish learning new math. This way, when my son gets into school, I can help him with all of his math homework

This week we had Ashley’s party because she is going to college and will not be here as much. It was awesome to see the positive impact she has had on everyone’s life and learning experience. She has touched so many lives here. Ashley is an amazing person and, even as an intern, I’m lucky to know her.

This has been a good week. I took two math tests and I moved up two grades. I have helped other people with their work. I help with the fundraiser. I played games and lost.

I worked on the fundraiser it was fun. Also worked on my typing skills.

This past week I thoroughly enjoyed attending and being a part of the fundraiser and auction. It was very satisfying to see the proceeds that the center received from the auction. The hard work put in by the staff and volunteers was rewarded with the benefits gained.

I went to the fundraiser at the beginning of the wee. It was the first time I had ever gone to a silent auction. I had a lot of fun walking around and keeping my bid the highest. It was a blast.

Every day that I come to work I always learn something new. I find this program very interesting. When someone has a question I am not always one hundred percent on it. There are some things I do not know, but I am determined to find out.

Literacy Action Center is a great place to work and learn. Everyone is understanding, and it is a lot of fun. It is so amazing to watch people blossom and learn. Watching the learners struggle then overcome is awesome.

Saturday, Sean and I went to Heritage Park and they were doing a type of reenactment of different battles during the Civil War. It was fun, exciting to be part of, and very educational. We made candles, enrolled in the Union Army and ate “hardtack,” which toasted like piece of salty cardboard.

I like being on facebook. I have tried to send a yes notice to a friend request I got from my tutor. She used to tutor me. Her name is Elisa. I finally ended up putting her in my message on facebook. So I wouldn’t have to go through losing her friend request.

My success for the week has been learning my fractions. I also did well on my test. I’m not that excited about working with fractions they give me a headache.

I am here down at Literacy Action Center learning my times tables in math and learning how to read and understand the books I read. I am doing better in math and reading. I am learning how to write my own story books. People who read them tell me they are interesting. I have one story that is a Christmas book about when I was in heaven before I came to earth. The other story is about being drugged out of a T.V. screen when this family was watching the movie “Wizard of Oz.” I took it personal when I was growing up when people called me midget and that I needed to go back to Oz. I am not taking it personal. I changed something negative to something positive, and made fun of it.

I made it to school this week and got to meet new people.
I have started to study a book on police exams so I can become a police officer. My math is way better now. My grammar is better now and my reading is also.

Well, the time is here. I’m starting school inless than a week. I get more nervous each day it gets closer. I’m taking five classes, which is 13 credit hours. I have seven text books. I hope I do okay this semester. I’m not taking one class subject that I like. Plus, I’m really sad to leave Tuesdays and Thursdays. I’m going to miss everybody a ton.

This week I learned fractions in math. I am going to do equations, ratios, and proportions next.

I am almost finished reading all of Mystery Ranch. I have only 37 more pages! I’m doing really well on my spelling and my addition.

Jordan
I think that blogs are fun. I am learning about math and grammar, and I am also learning about writing. I have been at the literacy program for about 5 months.

David
I have been here for a couple of months now, and every time I come in I learn something new. Right now I am learning how to find the perimeter and area of some pretty hard and weird shapes. It gets hectic, but I work through it. My goal is to get my sixty hours and pass the test. Then I will go to college to become a welder. After that, I will join the Marine Corp. The Literacy Action Center has really helped me a lot to reach my goal. Thank you to the people here that have helped me.

I’m learning how to speak and write grammaatically correct. I'm a lot better since I started volunteering here at the Literacy Action Center.

Jacob
I am working on subtracting and addition. I didn’t like it at all, but now I like it. I am getting better with it. For the first time ever I did some time tables yesterday. I want to move on to harder math, so I am working hard to try to get up into harder math. I want to go to college to get my masters in mechanics. I want to work on cars and trucks and get certified in mechanic work.

I have started reading Eldest by Christopher Paolini again. So far it’s going much better than the last time.

I am also doing a quick review (refresher or whatever anyone calls it) on my multiplication; hopefully I will get that mastered... Although, today’s multiplication was a horror (I admit). I’m sure more practice is in order.

I have started reading a new book called Something Mis ing. It’s about a thief who steals household items, such as food, toiletries, jewelry, and dishes. I am doing the summer reading program at the Salt Lake County Library System. I also read the Reader’s Choice books. I have a chance to win a prize when I vote for Reader’s Choice books.

Amanda
I’m reading the first of the Vampire Chronicles Series by Anne Rice. This is the fourth attempt of trying to read this book. The first three attempts were too hard. I’m trying again with a tape to follow along with.

Since I have been coming to the Literacy Action Center, I have more confidence in myself.

Katrina -- My Vampire Adventures
When I got the sixth book called Vampire Armand from Anne Rice, I got it on my birthday. That was on the 20th of July. It has been almost ten days, and I am almost done.

Spencer -- Math Problems
I am doing harder math. At first I hated it. Now I love it! I love it because it makes me think.

DeWayne -- My Experience at the Sonic Burger Restaurant
On Tuesday of this week, my nephew and I went to the Sonic Burger Restaurant that is on Redwood Road and about 33rd South. Apparently, they have a special on Tuesdays and the Jr. burgers only cost me forty-nine cents apiece. So for Sean and me, I ordered six of them and two drinks at one dollar apiece. The bill, with tax, came to $5.33.

When the carhop came with the order, I gave him $5.52 because I couldn’t find another penny. My change, of course, should have been just nineteen cents. Now, I don’t know if the waiter didn’t have the correct change or didn’t know how much I was supposed to get back because he gave me a quarter. I didn’t say anything to the carhop but I did call the cooperate office and let them know what happened.

If this was just an isolated incident the company was shorted by a few pennies. But times this by one hundred customers per day, and then times that by hundreds of restaurants, this can run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. It seems to me that there needs to be more people coming to the Literacy Action Center.

Amanda -- My experience working at the Literacy program
First of all I want to start this by introducing myself. My name is Amanda.
I am here because, I have to be… No, I’m joking! I’m here because, I like to help people. This job is perfect for me. Ever sense I started working here I liked it. I wouldn’t have comeback if I didn’t. “Ha, Ha.” This experience so far has been GREAT! I think the people that I work with are very sweet. Individuals are unique in their own way!

This week I had the wonderful experience of witnessing the birth of my 2nd daughter. Thinking of the students at Literacy Action Center and their enthusiasm and willingness to learn new things has reminded me of the task I am now undertaking. I will be teaching and learning new things with my baby girl on a daily basis. I hope that this excitement to gather knowledge will also be displayed by my baby girl (Sadie). I am looking forward to watching her grow and develop, just as I have watched the students here do. This is a very exciting time for me, and I look forward each new day.

My goals are to stick with my goals; I want to succeed with me getting ready for my state exam. I get to study one hour a day here at the Literacy Action Center. It is great that Deb is giving me the opportunity to study. I am now half way through the book.

Our Successes July 7th

This is the fifth internship job site I’ve been to. I felt like I was lost and going in circles, stuck in one place. My first day here at the Literacy Action Center was good. Now that I’ve met Deb, my supervisor, I am working towards a goal. She asked me what my skills were. I’ve told her that I wanted to become certified in CNA, but I didn’t have the time to do so. Now Deb gives me two hours or more here to study. I’m four chapters into the nursing book. I feel confident about taking my test, when I am ready.

On June 3rd, when I started at Literacy Action Center I could not read or spell. Since I started I have taken and passed 15 spelling tests. It makes me happy that I am learning a lot.

I now remember more grammar from the teachings at the Literacy Action Center. Now I will be able to help my son when he has questions about his homework

This past week, I learned about putting together and setting up shelves at Michael’s Art & Crafts. Working like a carpenter is fun, very interesting and educating for me. I would not mind doing some more in the future.

When I first started learning how to read, I could not even read the word “the.” Now I’m at a sixth grade reading level, thanks to my dad.

At the Literacy Action Center I’m getting better at counting change back to customers. I feel more confident now than when I first started.

I have learned how to do addition, subtraction, and I am also learning about grammar. I think this place is a good place to learn.

Last November I took the TABE test, at the community College. I didn’t do very well. My scores were low. I’ve been coming to Literacy Action most of the year. My reading, spelling, and math have improved a lot. This week I went to the college and took the test again and passed with real improvement. My reading score has almost tripled, and all of my other scores went up too. I owe all my improvements to the teachers at Literacy Action.

When I came to Literacy Action Center I would read to my daughter on occasion, but it wasn’t an everyday thing. I figured that since I was a good reader my daughter would be too. I figured it wasn’t something I needed to worry about. After coming to L.A.C. I realize that I need to help her to become a good reader, and that it just doesn’t happen on its own. I’ve watched the struggles of the learners as they learn to read. I’ve realized that illiteracy can happen to anyone. Now I have started reading children’s books with my daughter each night. We have read “Winnie the Pooh” (The Hero’s Party) and the “Disney Bedtime Stories” series. We have also read some of the “Disney Princess Stories.” Tonight we are going to start another set of “Disney Stories” involving Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck.

I had a math test and I was at a 2nd grade level. Now I am on fractions. I’m not too good with them so I’m not very excited to do them, but I will.

I did my testing last week and scored high on my reading. That made me feel better about myself. The only thing I need to work on now is my math.

This week I found out that I have 7 complete successes up on the board at school. The seven successes are all books that I have read.

When I first started I was at a second grade level. This past week I took a test and found out I am at a fifth grade level. I’m grateful for my success.

Terry
I was not too good at times tables when I first started. I am now good at division. I would like to thank Deb and the volunteers for schooling me and helping me read and write better.

David
I finally finished math at a tenth grade level. I had forgotten almost all of it when I graduated on March 5th of 2010. I haven’t used math for three years. I met with a counselor named Flavia Cervino, she said that she could put me into a program that would help me with my math. IT is now my second week here. I have already regained and remembered how to do a lot of math. I am constantly remembering the math that I thought I had forgotten. When I am done with this program I hope to go to college and become a welder.

I just finished my 3rd quarter of college. I turned my finals in on Sunday just in time. I do not know how I did yet but should know soon. I started my new classes on Monday. I am now in Science class and Accounting math. I am not really worried about my accounting class but I am about my science one. I will keep you updated on how I am doing in my new classes.

Jake Lynn Frandsen
I have gotten better with my reading and math.
Before I came here I could not read well, and now I can read better with all the help from everyone here. My mom has seen a big difference with my reading, so she wants me to keep coming.

I can do my addition and subtraction better, and I feel more confident using my math skills outside of school. I used to use a calculator but now I can do math in my head.

I have gotten better working on cars with all the help from my dad and friends. Working on cars helps me relief stress, therefore it helps to relax me.

I’m thanking you, Deborah Young, and all the others who have helped me become a better reader and writer! All of you have been a very big support to me, and I can only imagine all of the support you have given others. Just about a month ago I couldn’t spell big words. Just a month ago, I was in grade level three and now I’m working my way to fourth grade. I am 35 years old. When I was growing up, I didn’t do too well in school. I seemed to feel very uncomfortable towards myself, believing I couldn’t learn, although there is no such thing as I can’t. I have a lot of things I want in life. I want to open more than one business at once and I can do it because I’ve already done it. What has been holding me back is a G.E.D. or high school diploma. I hope others will be comfortable enough to give Literacy Action Center a chance, because I believe in you just like I believe in myself. With the help I’m receiving, it’s going to help me succeed in all of my goals in my life. I know it will. Again, thank you, Literacy Action Center.

Before I came to Literacy Action Center I couldn’t do subtraction. Now I can. I have done better. I can count now without using poker chips. Darlene, my tutor, helps me with math and reading. She said I do well at counting and do well at math. I am currently on a new book. I love the Literacy Action Center. I am learning great new things now. I do well at subtraction now. I am glad Darlene is my tutor and makes a special effort to help me.

On Saturday, I barbequed for my friends and family. I had fun. I’m writing a song for my friends. I am doing better at math and reading. When I started here I could only do addition and now I can do multiplication. I practice reading as often as I can. I am getting better.

It’s been about six months since I came to Literacy Action Center. I have learned a lot since coming here. I am doing better at subtraction.

I know how to subtract, add and doing it sucks! I want to move on with math so I can be better with math. I want to read better. I want to learn how to spell better. I want to learn how to save money.

Before I came to Literacy Action Center I couldn’t read, write, or do math. Now I am doing really good with math. The type of math I’m doing is division and multiplication. The type of reading I am doing is fiction. I’m reading the Twilight series. They were hard for me at the beginning and now they are getting a lot easier for me to read. I’ve accomplished so many things over the last 3 years. I took tests last week that compared me to where I was last year and I have improved on math and reading. I still have a difficult time working on story problems. I want to say “thank you” to all the teachers and volunteers at L.A.C. for helping me understand how to read, write and do math. In closing, I want to say that I’m reading chapter books and I understand the books. I also understand my math, reading, writing and spelling.

I have been learning to stay in school and say NO to drinking alcohol.

My success this week is that my body’s illness hasn’t been active. Therefore, I was able to come volunteer all the hours I needed and wanted to do this week.

I almost finished my third Boxcar Children book. I successfully completed The Big Wave. It was about people learning to surf.

I found out I was approved for my Pell Grant last Wednesday. Therefore, this Wednesday I registered at Salt Lake Community College. I will be going to school all day on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I have 30 credit hours now. I need 63 for my Associates Degree. While going to school I still plan on volunteering with Literacy Action Center and tutoring. I also plan to spend all my studying time at the LAC.

My vacation was fun. We went to Vegas, my mom, sister, her two kids, and me. We got to see the musical of the Lion King. It was great. We went swimming, got in the hot tub, and got to see the NASCAR track. The track was my favorite part. I didn’t know about the NASCAR track until the day we went, my sister knew someone that worked at the track. That person gave us a ride around. I learned that the cars get up on the track and they go 180 M.P.H.

Today I was awake the whole time in class. I felt like I was back in 1972 when I was twelve, learning about myself: who I am and what is my personality. I was studying about the Mayan calendar. I am Storm 5. Weather is my sign. According to this sign, I can be calm, harsh, or fair. I am intelligent and organized.

Sometimes there is too much information to learn in one day, and learning can be stressful for me. If I let half of my brain decide to quit thinking, I go crazy. I don’t know if whoever reads this will understand me or feel what it’s like to wear my shoes.

Many years ago, I challenged myself to learn about my weaknesses: math and science. When I get frustrated, I take a break and do something for fun. Then I go back to where I stopped, and force myself to educate myself. I am honest with myself, and I like to do things right.

I used to think that being an adult you should just know what you need to know. But we don’t. I always knew there were adults that could not read, write, or do math too well and want to learn more. I need to learn to spell myself.
LAC is a great place to learn. The teachers here work well with all the students. The students here get a lot of one on one time with the tutors. I am lucky enough to work here with all these great people.

Since I have started working at Literacy Action, not only have I learned a lot of things but I have made a few good friends.

I have learned how to have patience when helping someone with something. I used to get really frustrated when the person wouldn’t understand what I was trying to explain, and now I don’t. Now I will try to find different ways to explain it. If the person doesn’t get it one way, maybe he’ll get it another.

I have also learned that just because I know how to do it, and I think it’s easy to do, doesn’t always mean that everyone else knows how to do it. I guess it’s that I have been taking for granted the things that I know.

I have also made a few good friends that I talk to and hang out with outside of work. It’s nice to have friends that I work with that I get along with outside also.

My sister Annie is twenty-six years old and is mentally challenged. On an average day she has the mentality of about an eight year old. She has a hard time finding books that she can understand and still enjoy. I walked into the house the other day to find Annie sitting with my daughter reading a story out of the Disney collection. As I listened to her stumble over the words, I had to remind myself to give her a chance to get the word right. I was so proud of her when she took the time to slow down and sound out the word to get it right.

Coming to Literacy Action Center has taught me patience because I am always so quick to correct everyone. But now since I slow down and give people a chance to do it themselves, I have received the greatest gift of all--to listen to my sister read aloud.

I started working at the Literacy Action Center in November 2009. I am working with a student named Tom, who is print challenged. Since I have been working with him, he has come a long way. He can spell better and identify words better than when I started working with him. When I started working with him, he could only basically spell his name, mom and dad. Now he can spell words like fish, man, has, in and hand (along with a few other words). He can identify actions, such as jumping and kicking. He gets homework on the days that he attends the Literacy Action Center, which helps him learn while at home. His progress makes me feel like I am making a difference in his life and in his education.

I have come a long way in the past two years with learning to manage my anger. In the past, I had difficulty expressing frustration in a proper way.

I have been able to receive help through medication. I have learned that having ADHD contributed to my frustration, because I was not able to concentrate on everyday activities, such as school, work, and communication with others.

Through getting help, I have learned different methods of dealing with situations. The medication helps me relax, so I can rest and sleep better, which helps me feel better during the day. My attitude has changed toward other people. I am happier now, because other people respect me more, and I respect myself more since I can handle situations with a better attitude.

Jayson just started with us on 9/4. He had two complaints about reading: 1) he could never see pictures in his head created by the words he read and 2) he got lost easily in trying to sound out the words. On 9/4, we determined that Jayson needed to use a color overlay to help the words settle down on the page. Today, Jayson told me that using the color overlay over the holiday weekend helped him immensely. He was most excited to report that he could visualize the story in his head. He then proceeded to tell me about the characters and setting. According to Jayson, this was a first for him. He was mighty proud of what he could now do.

Ellen finally finished Challenger 5. She has worked hard to spell the words in this book. To move on to Challenger 6 however, she has to be able to generate her own sentences with appropriate punctuation. This task stumps her more often than not.

He was the first to find the definition of the word we were discussing in class and he read (with help) the definition aloud. He was surprised that he felt comfortable enough to try it.

Terry feels good about his multiplication skills. Two months ago he walked in our door not knowing how to multiply. He didn't think he could. Since then he has learned the times tables and can multiply multiple digits, and he knows what to do with the decimals. He's excited about this new development.

Literacy Instruction: We need your help

Literacy instruction takes many forms. For this group of adult learners, science concepts form the foundation for the vocabulary they want to learn. We are looking for groups or individuals in Utah's Salt Lake and Davis Counties who would like to share their expertise with our adult learners. Learning to read is more than just converting sounds and symbols on a printed page into speech sounds. Learning to read is about opening doors into areas of life that these individuals may have experienced but never understood.

Raising Academic Achievement Scores

Because the Literacy Action Center receives a small portion of federal Adult Basic Education funding through the Utah State Office of Education, we must help our enrollees (adult learners) raise their scores on the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE). The TABE contains three parts: reading, (written) language, math (computation and application). In all three areas, reading skills are the foundation for all the activities in each area.

Our instruction incorporates decoding (phonemic awareness, phonics, sight words, & word analysis); vocabulary; comprehension; and fluency skills. While the English-speaking, low-literate adults that we specialize in educating show gains in reading everyday materials, writing brief notes, and making change at the grocery story, they still struggle to show gains on the TABE.

Therefore, as the only literacy organization in Salt Lake County and Davis County, we continually strive to search for methods, materials, and answers that will best help our enrollees. Three of the questions that we have been pursuing with the help of Reading Horizons' software and instructional program are:

Question 1: Under what conditions can we infuse a visible coding structure into our curriculum that puts learners in charge of accurately analyzing and synthesizing unfamiliar words?

Questions 2: How will learning a visible coding system for decoding and pronouncing (encoding) words move our adult learners from ABE 1 to ABE 2?

Question 3: How long will it take for this transformation to be evident in the TABE results?
